According to the World Health Organization (WHO), accidents remain to be one of the leading causes of death in the Philippines. In fact, drowning is one of the Top 5 major causes of mortality in the country along with assault, transport accidents, intentional self harm and accidental falls.
Sebellino, a veteran journalist in the country stated that children from ages fourteen (14) years old and below are the common victims of drowning. Furthermore, for this age bracket, drowning is the second leading cause of death. Children from zero (0) to seventeen (17) years old are also vulnerable to drowning.
For those who don’t know, the Philippines is an archipelago: it is surrounded by bodies of water. There are a lot of beautiful beaches in the country which are not only summer destinations for locals but also considered to be very effective foreign tourist destinations.
This is probably why it is common for families to celebrate and spend time in pristine bodies of water every now an then. With the Filipinos’ love for water, it is no question why drowning rate is high.
